OnePlus, the Chinese smartphone giant is giving its flagship smartphone a new look. Just after four months of launching OnePlus 5, the company has launched a new flagship smartphone named the OnePlus 5T. The OnePlus 5T comes with various new features with the display being the most noticeable change in the device. You’ll now find a 6-inch full-HD AMOLED display with very small bezels which is a great improvement from the 5.5-inch screen of the OnePlus 5. This smartphone is a direct competition for the likes of Samsung Galaxy S8 and Apple iPhone 8.
OnePlus 5T first impressions
Display and Design
The first thing that you notice when you look at the smartphone is its screen. It’s a big 6-inch AMOLED screen, which boasts a 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution, which is great. The screen provides great picture quality and vibrant colors as well. The OnePlus 5T has also got a new Sunlight Display feature, which automatically improves the contrast when you are out in the sun. This feature is almost same as the True Tone feature of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X.
Another thing that you notice when you see the phone is that there’s no fingerprint sensor at the front, instead it has been moved to the back to make room for the larger screen. In terms of the fell, the newest OnePlus flagship doesn’t feel any different from its predecessor. It has got a rounded soundblasted-aluminum chassis with a noticeable camera bump at the back of it. And the best of all the device has got a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is a treat for the music lovers.
New features of the OnePlus 5T
The new OnePlus 5T, has many new features and improvements over its predecessor. Let’s take a look at them.
The Face Unlock is a new feature that the new 5T comes with. However, let’s be clear that its not like the authentic 3D Face ID that comes with the iPhone X. Face unlock is a basic feature that uses the front camera to create a 2D image of your face and use it to unlock the device. This feature is very fast and the phone can be unlocked faster. It might not be as good as the Face ID but the Face Unlock is more than handy for the people.
The OnePlus 5T has two shooters at the back, just like the OnePlus 5. However, the second camera that the 5T comes with is the real difference between both of them. While the primary camera remains unchanged with a 16-megapixel shooter with f/1.7 aperture, the camera next to it is now a 20-megapixel shooter with the same aperture, which replaces the telephoto lens of its predecessor. This new lens also sports a feature called the Intelligent Pixel Technology. The feature combines four photodetector sites on the sensor into one, which makes the pixels larger, like the HTC’s UltraPixel system.
OnePlus 5T technical specifications
Built and design
When compared with its predecessor, the design of the 5T hasn’t changed much. The only difference that you can feel is the size since it now sports a 5-inch screen. In terms of the design, the back of the device has curves on the edges that meet the front of the device. OnePlus has removed the horizontal line design that it introduced with the OnePlus 5. At the bottom of the device you’ll find a Type-C reversible USB 2.0 port in between the speaker grill and the 3.5mm headphone jack. On the right you’ll find the SIM tray and the power button and on the left you find volume buttons and the alert slider. You can also find little antenna bands running along the borders of the phone that integrate well with the design.
As mentioned earlier, the display of 5T is a 6-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The pixel density o the display is 401 ppi and the screen-to-body ratio is almost 80%, which is quite good. OnePlus has also tweaked the color profiles available in the smartphone to ensure that users have multiple options, which also includes a dedicated DCI-P3 colour profile under display settings.
Chipset, RAM, & storage
The OnePlus 5T comes with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor which clocks at up to 2.45 GHz along with an Adreno 540 GPU that’s enough to handle graphics-intensive tasks. In terms of the RAM and the internal storage, the device will come in two variants, first one with an 6 GB LPDDR4X RAM and 64 GB of UFS 2.1 2-lane storage while the second variant with an 8 GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB UFS 2.1 2-lane internal storage. However, the device doesn’t support any external support, which means you have to adjust in the internal storage that you’re provided.
Operating System and software
The OnePlus 5T comes with Android Nougat 7.1.1 based OxygenOS 4.7.0 out-of-the-box. It’s expected that the device will get the Android Oreo 8.0 Oreo in early 2018. As OnePlus mentioned, it will start the OnePlus Open Beta program for this device later this month, which will help in increasing the test base of the customers.
Just like the OnePlus 5, the OnePlus 5T comes with a dual camera setup at the rear. However, the company have changed the implementation of the camera by changing the 16-megapixel telephoto lens with a 20-megapixel lens with normal focus. This setup will now provide enhanced low-light photography and the objects in the photographs will also look very good. Additionally, 5T comes with a 16-megapixel shooter with f/2.0 at the front for the selfies.
Price and availability
When it comes to the OnePlus 5T price in India, it will be priced starting from Rs. 32,999 for the 6Gb RAM and 64GB internal storage variant. You can buy this beautiful smartphone starting 21st of November in India. it will be up for grabs at the official OnePlus online store and at leading online stores as well.
Overall the phone feels the same as its predecessor. However, you’ll easily notice many welcome changes that might get you intrigued. The almost bezel less display is a sight for the sore eyes and can be defined as the best feature of the phone. OnePlus has also tried to innovate things by introducing Face Unlock feature, which although is very basic but is very effective. Now, its all upon the audience on what they think about the phone.
